The Mazda6 takes the company’s dynamic KODO: Soul of Motion design theme to new heights.
Created under the design watch of Mazda’s chief designer, Akira Tamatani, this award-winning design language visually embodies the central characteristics of all Mazda’s passenger vehicles - vitality, athleticism and agility.
The Sport Nav version of the Mazda6 can be instantly identified by its unique front grille, which features a stronger three dimensional appearance with a signature wing design that runs through the lower lip of the grille and into the LED headlights.
Together with the LED tail lights, they imbue the Mazda6 with a strikingly distinctive face and an unmistakable nocturnal signature. The sleekness of the Tourer models is further enhanced by a compact shark fin antenna. Raised and flared wings flow into swept-back A-pillars to give the Mazda6 a low-slung coupe-like stance. This muscular posture accentuated by the long wheelbase – 2,830mm on the Saloon and 2,750mm on the Tourer – that locates the wheels at the very corners of the car.
The Mazda6 is available in eight colours including Mazda’s new Machine Grey Metallic, which having starred on the Mazda MX-5 RF at the 2016 New York Motor Show, goes into production on the Mazda6. However, its lines are as functional as they are head-turning – the Saloon slices cleanly through the air with a low 0.26 drag coefficient, while the Tourer posts an equally impressive figure of Cd 0.28. The wing mirrors, which now feature wraparound turn indicators - mounted on the door shoulders – play a key role in achieving the car’s aerodynamic performance.
The spacious and generously appointed five-seater cabin of the Mazda6 features a driver-centric combination of ideal driving position, exceptional visibility, intuitive layout, high quality materials, and generous levels of infotainment, safety and convenience features.
The model is marked out by its driver-focused dashboard centre console and intuitive rotary Multimedia Commander with separate volume dial. For Sport Nav models, the hooded instrumentation is complemented by the Active Driving Display, Mazda’s innovative colour head-up display that includes Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR). It projects key information such as vehicle speed, turn-by-turn navigation instructions and information from the advanced safety systems to the driver’s eye line.
The dashboard features a centrally-mounted 7-inch colour touch-screen that displays all infotainment details, and incorporates DAB radio, as well as MZD-Connect, which pairs with a smartphone to deliver online internet and social media connectivity*. The rotary Multimedia Commander now also features a separate volume dial for heightened usability.
The generous wheelbase of the Mazda6 Saloon and Tourer results in excellent levels of passenger accommodation. Both front and rear seat cushions feature urethane filling that has excellent high vibrations absorption qualities, while manual height adjustment for the front passenger seat is standard.
Intelligent space-boosting touches abound, spearheaded by an electronic parking brake on the centre console, which frees up extra space compared to a conventional handbrake. This is complemented by spacious door pockets, and an accordion style sliding lid for the twin front cup holders.
The luggage area of the Saloon is a full 480-litres, and the boot lid features a single-piece ‘swan neck’ hinge that is less intrusive than complex jointed hinges. The Tourer’s loadbay – capable of swallowing 522-litres of luggage – has a lightweight tonneau cover that can be easily stored beneath the floor of the boot.
The Tourer’s Karakuri 60:40 split rear seats fold into a flexible flat cargo area, a simple procedure using either the levers located on each side of the boot or the standard release buttons on the seatbacks themselves. Folding the rear seats creates a maximum cargo capacity of 1,664-litres.
